Mark R. Lomas received the B.Sc and Ph.D in Applied and Computational Mathematics from the University of Sheffield in 1989 and 1995 respectively. The Ph.D was in investigation into the phenomenon of voltage collapse, funded by the National Grid. He has been a Research Associate at Sheffield University since 1994 mainly working on the global land surface carbon & hydrological cycles via dynamic vegetation models: specifically the Sheffield Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (SDGVM) and its predecessor DOLY, which he played a key role in developing. A large part of his research has been concerned with utilising EO data to test and improve these models. More recently he has been working on P-band Synthetic Aperture Radar, looking at system effects affecting measurements of Backscatter and Biomass, as well as scintillation.
